Unlocking the great reader in every child
Our Why
Only one-third of students read at grade level due to systemic inequities. Our kids deserve better. We can and must eradicate illiteracy in our lifetime.
The Research
Research tells us that readers who do not exceed a certain decoding level – known as the decoding threshold – cannot access reading comprehension and won’t show growth in reading proficiency. We can change this. Read more about what we're learning.
The Solution
At Magpie, we’re developing research-based PK-8+ digital literacy tools that leverage students' unique characteristics to help them master the foundational reading skills they need to become strong, confident readers.
We've launched a supplemental digital tool that can be used in schools year-round to support the reading development of Kindergarten students. In 20+ minute sessions, students engage in developmentally appropriate instructional videos and educational games to address the key subcomponents of Kindergarten literacy: phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding, word chaining, letter formation, print concepts, high-frequency words, and meaningful reading experiences. In the future, we plan to develop this tool to be used with grade levels through eighth grade.
